Balfour Tragedy: Four Siblings Arrested for Alleged Murder of Elderly Father
In a shocking incident that has left the Balfour community reeling, four siblings, aged between 36 and 45, were arrested on Saturday, 17 August 2024, following the alleged gruesome murder of their 71-year-old father. The incident unfolded in the quiet town of Balfour, where the community discovered the lifeless body of the elderly man at around 11:00 AM.
The police and medical personnel were immediately called to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the victim on a couch with multiple visible gunshot wounds. Empty cartridges were scattered nearby, further evidence of the violent act. Unfortunately, the paramedics could only confirm the worst—the victim had already succumbed to his injuries.
A murder case was promptly opened, and a specialized team of investigators began probing the details of the crime. Initial findings revealed that the victim had previously applied for and was granted a Protection Order against his children, raising concerns about ongoing family tensions.
In a swift and coordinated effort, the police tracked down and arrested the four siblings—three daughters and one son—in Heidelberg, Gauteng, on the same day as the murder. The suspects are set to appear in the Balfour Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 20 August 2024, facing charges of murder.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has condemned the brutal killing, describing it as a tragedy that has shocked the community. He commended the police officers for their excellent work in ensuring the swift arrest of the suspects.
The community of Balfour is now left grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event, as the investigation continues to unfold.
